University of Birmingham Postgraduate Courses in Occupational Health

Birmingham offers Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma and Masters courses in Occupational Health (OH) over one or two years. 

  • PGCert – 6 one-week blocks focusing mainly on OH practice 
  • PGDip – PGCert plus 6 additional taught weeks including research methods 
  • MSc – PGDip plus a research dissertation 

Each module includes a practical component eg, workplace inspection in a foundry, case discussions, ergonomic risk assessments in a mechanical workshop, audiometry and spirometry practical sessions, developing an OH services for a company. These exercises enable individuals to apply risk assessment tools in occupational settings and make informed decisions on how to reduce and manage risks. 

The majority of the modules are one week in duration and are designed in line with the syllabus recommended by Faculties of Occupational Medicine (Ireland and London).
