This meeting, jointly organised with the Faculty of Occupational Medicine and the Royal Society of Medicine, will explore health and safety themes common to all three transport sectors; air, rail and road.

We bring together occupational health practitioners from each of these industries to share their advice and professional experiences, as we consider how lessons may be applied across all disciplines for occupational health professionals assessing fitness to work.

Fitness to work and occupational health in the transport sector has long been a topic of government and public concern. This is mainly due to the risk of harm to the public, or fellow workers, should an incident occur. Because of the unique risks of safety-critical work, stringent frameworks for statutory regulations and industry-specific health guidelines and regulations have been developed.

The meeting will be beneficial to all occupational health practitioners and other clinicians working in these industries.

We will split the day into two themes. In the morning, we will be exploring mental health and substance misuse. In the afternoon, we will be covering medical case risk management. There will be plenty of opportunities for panel and audience discussions and debate.

This meeting will cover:

• Aviation mental health - appreciating the Psychiatrists view; carrying out mental health assessments in safety-critical workers
• Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and managing work-related exposures to traumatic events in a session led by Professor Neil Greenberg
• Drug and alcohol misuse - an update on testing in the workplace and practical considerations
• Cases from a practitioners viewpoint - how to provide a balanced and justifiable assessment for fitness to work
• Regulatory risk assessment for aviation, rail and road – considerations in decision-making, standards and case-based flexibility
• An overview of the Transport Health and Work Programme at the Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
